Event travel questions
The things people ask most before booking flights for a major event.
When should I buy flights from Chile for major events?
For concerts, football and festivals outside South America, the sweet spot from SCL is 4 to 6 months ahead of the date. CLP fares climb hard 4 to 6 weeks out — to Coachella, the Super Bowl or Lollapalooza Chicago, jumps of 700,000 to 1,500,000 CLP in that window are standard. For regional events (Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza Argentina, F1 São Paulo) 8 to 12 weeks usually does the job. Set a price alert on the exact route from Chile and always look at Tuesday and Wednesday departures — they tend to be 80,000 to 250,000 CLP cheaper than Friday flights. Compare LATAM, Sky and JetSMART side by side; on Lima, Buenos Aires and São Paulo routes the gap between the three can hit 200,000 CLP.
What are the cheapest routes and airports from Chile to international events?
For the US, SCL–MIA on LATAM or American and SCL–LAX on LATAM are the most consistent non-stops; comparing those against a connection via LIM (LATAM) sometimes shaves 200,000 to 400,000 CLP. For Europe, SCL–MAD on LATAM or Iberia is Chile's only non-stop, while SCL–CDG and SCL–FCO require a GRU or MAD connection. For Australia (Australian Open, F1 Melbourne), SCL–SYD on LATAM (via AKL) is essentially the only non-stop — comparing against QF via LAX may save time but rarely money. For South America, SCL–LIM, SCL–EZE and SCL–GRU are heavily competitive between LATAM, Sky and JetSMART; for Lollapalooza Argentina, SCL–EZE on Sky often wins.
Which Chilean airport is best for travelling to events abroad?
SCL (Arturo Merino Benítez) is essentially the only Chilean airport with a deep international network: LATAM, Sky, JetSMART, American, United, Delta, Iberia, Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways and others connect it to the rest of the Americas, Europe, Oceania and Asia via one stop. For concerts in North America or festivals in Europe there is no practical alternative to SCL from Chile. VAP (Valparaíso/Viña del Mar) is mostly used for charters and general aviation. To stretch the budget, always compare LATAM non-stops from SCL against connections via LIM or MVD, where Sky and JetSMART sometimes offer 150,000 to 350,000 CLP discounts if you have schedule flexibility.
Can I book flights between multiple host cities on one ticket from Chile?
Yes — and it's almost always cheaper in CLP than buying separate tickets. For a tour (concert in Buenos Aires + festival in São Paulo + show in Lima), use multi-city search: LATAM, Sky and JetSMART let you stitch SCL with intra-South-American legs on a single PNR, often 200,000 to 500,000 CLP cheaper than two one-ways. For short distances (Mendoza, Bariloche), Andesmar and Cata Internacional sleeper buses are comfortable and far cheaper. In Europe, AVE Madrid–Barcelona, TGV Paris–Lyon and German ICE trains are faster door-to-door and usually beat the plane on price. Avoid stitching together separate OTA bookings — if one leg is delayed, the next airline owes you nothing.
Do Chileans need a visa to attend events abroad?
For most major destinations, no. Chile is in the US Visa Waiver Program — ESTA (around 21 USD, approved in minutes) is valid for 2 years, perfect for the Super Bowl, NBA, Coachella, Lollapalooza Chicago and concerts in NY, Miami or LA. The Schengen Area (Tomorrowland, Primavera Sound, Champions League) is visa-free for up to 90 days — just a passport with 6 months of validity. The UK requires an online ETA (10 GBP) from 2025 for Glastonbury or Wimbledon. Canada requires an eTA (7 CAD). Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Japan and South Korea are visa-free. Australia needs a free eVisitor. China and India still require consular visas — start the process the moment you book your SCL flight.
What if my flight from Chile drops in price after I book?
LATAM Plus and Top fares allow changes with a reduced CLP fee; Basic fares charge significantly more, and refunds are rare. Sky Airline lets you upgrade to Plus Pack for additional flexibility. JetSMART is ultra-low-cost — changes and refunds rarely apply, though they allow a flex-fare upgrade for the difference. Some Chilean OTAs (Despegar, AirEuropa, eDreams) honour 24-hour free cancellation — if the fare drops in that window, void and rebook. The most practical move is to keep the price alert running on your route even after buying. Banco Estado Visa Signature, Santander Black and Itaú Black credit cards bundle travel insurance with cancellation cover, useful for expensive event trips.
